Saying Thanks with Pie and Ice Cream

Lots of Kudos for Supply Chain Staff

  • Nathan Mosley gave a shout out to Maria Mazzei for her help/support on the Comprehensive Furniture RFP along with Bernadette Jimenez and Ellen Owens. These three and Mosley make up the “new” core team and are moving the project forward through teamwork and collaboration.
  • Maria Mazzei praised Robert Puerzer and Gaynelle Celestine for creating the master service agreements, something that is much needed in the procurement department.
  • Strategic Sourcing’s Joanne Petersen and John Arbolino were lauded for their work on SecureBox that allows the UCSF Box.com site to be HIPAA compliant. The pair were the primary points for the Box DLP (Data Loss Prevention) RFP, working with Jannelle Fong.  CipherCloud was the winning bidder, and they negotiated a 92 percent discount on their pricing.  Even better, CipherCloud signed contracts for all of the University of California, so any campus can use this pricing.
"Thank you all for working diligently on this from negotiation to implementation!”
    — Jane Wong, Executive Director-IT App
“Great job to everyone on the team and thank you for the attention to detail.  This is an important step in managing risk for our mission while enabling nimble collaborations.”
Joe R. Bengfort, Associate Vice Chancellor/CIO
  • From Melissa Gee:
    • Thank you Larissa Garcia for helping with supplier registration duties as the Supplier Registration Team fully transitions from the Controller’s Office to SCM.
    • Thank you Larissa Garcia and Laura Marsony for stepping up and taking on additional responsibilities in the last few months given the SC Solutions team’s loss of staff.
    • Thank you Sonya Valencia for helping the SC Solutions Team with additional change orders and net terms changes on purchase orders.

Summer Fiesta is Fun for Everyone!
Supply Chain Management staff gathered on July 26 for a “Summer Fiesta” at Commodore Park in San Bruno. Highlights of the event included delicious food (a taco truck and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream), sports games and a couple of candy-filled piñatas. Staff also received some great raffle prizes, including Giants' tickets and a variety of gift cards.

The event was organized by Donté Casey, Ellen Lenzi, Sonya Valencia and Carol Tady. Posters with photos of the fun are posted at each of our locations or you can see them here.

Kudos Korner: Praise for SCM Staff
  • Adele Anfinson, Director, Student Health and Counseling Services at UCSF, praised Maria Mazzei for her great work on the Quest Diagnostics RFP: "She listened to us, acted promptly, proactively gave us follow-up along the way and finished the whole process in about one month when others let us just sit around for over four months.  From where we sit – she is a star!"
  • Gaynelle Ce'Lestine was lauded for her exceptional work for the UCSF Department of Neurology: "She has worked closely with us over many months to close out a very complicated, demanding and extended finance scenario for one of our clinical research study sponsors," said Neurology's Mary Farrant. "She is a great representative for your group."
  • Elizabeth Rocha, working with Community Health Workers, sent praise for Sonya Valencia's work on a facilities contract: "You're the best. I appreciate how responsive you've been amongst what I imagine are the many requests you manage everyday."
  • Bernadette Jimenez recognized Purchasing Analyst Timothy Alt for his work on the contract for repairs for all gas and diesel UCSF shuttles and vans. This was the first bidding event since the Finance Service Center's purchasing team became the buyers for Campus Life Services. Over the five-year duration of the contract, the potential savings is $997,640.
  • Andrew Clark and Greg Macway each have articles in the Educational Procurement Journal's summer issue. Clark writes about hiring and Macway continues his Heard on the Street column with a look at construction spending.

Kathy Hennig: Cultivating a Hobby
SCM Purchasing Manager Kathy Hennig had dreams of working in a wine-tasting room when she retires. When a friend bought some property in wine country, that dream turned into a quarter-acre vineyard, a visit by the Oakland police and, hopefully, some great wine next year. Read the whole story...

Two SCM Staffers Receive Impact Awards

CFO Rosemarie Rae with Stacey Templeman and Laurina Ashby
Stacey Templeman and Laurina Ashby each received an Impact Award at the UC Berkeley Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Town Hall earlier this month.

Templeman was honored for her work with the University Partnership Program (UPP). The program builds University-wide relationships with business partners by collaborating across units to create opportunities that align with Berkeley’s values and mission of teaching, research and public service. Currently, Stacey assists UPP by managing the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, serving as a single point of contact for suppliers during the solicitation process. She also oversees the financial analysis of prospective commodities, analyzes financial proposals, and manages public records and conflict of interest.

Ashby was applauded for her collaboration with the Berkeley Human Resources unit to create a new service and retirement awards program for the University.  The new program will save Berkeley almost $59,000 annually and $176,550 over three years. The March 29 blog post, below, details how Ashby went above and beyond to ensure that the University has awards that reflect the great work faculty and staff do every day.

You can read more about the Impact Awards on the CFO website as well.

  • Karen Hamblett says thanks to Contract Specialist Jason Shane and Buyer Mike Murphy for their great work on the netPolarity contract.
  • "Thank you to Larissa Garcia  and Olga Gumankova for all their hard work in the IT PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade. They rigorously tested the BearBuy to PeopleSoft PO integration to help ensure a successful upgrade." – Melissa Gee

Metrics and More on the Bulletin Boards

Don't forget to check out the bulletin boards at each SCM location. Each month there are new metrics, the project tracker and a Supply Chain Champion posted.

This month's Champion is UCSF Buyer Daisy Palma. Like much of her family, Palma had planned to become a doctor, but she changed course along the way. See more of her story on the posters or here

If you have ideas for blog articles, a Supply Chain Champion nominee or want to recognize a co-worker in the Kudos Korner, please email Carol Tady.

    Nimfa Delos Santos Retires
SCM staffers gathered on April 8 to say goodbye to Nimfa Delos Santos, Manager of the Card Program and Supplier Registration. Delos Santos, who retired earlier this month, was joined by current and former colleagues and several guests spoke and shared memories. In case you missed the party, here are a few photos of the fun.

Ashby Helps Launch New Awards Program at Berkeley
UC Berkeley Retirement AwardService and retirement awards have long been a tradition at University of California campuses. These gifts have ranged from simple pins to elaborate glass pieces to the less-sublime, but more practical crockpot.

Looking to recognize faculty and staff in a way that reflected their loyalty and service as well as the greatness of the institution, UC Berkeley’s Jeannine Raymond, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Human Resources (HR), began two years ago an effort to revamp the campus awards program. Raymond had a concept and, early in the process, her office reached out to Supply Chain Management, Laurina Ashby, for guidance in finding and working with a supplier that would be willing to create a custom design within Berkeley’s budget. Read the whole story...

    Check Out the New Postings
You may have noticed some new postings lately on the bulletin boards at Supply Chain Management (SCM) sites. They include the project tracker, monthly unit metrics and a poster featuring a Supply Chain Champion. These items are meant to provide more transparency about our work and to recognize staff members.

The project tracker has information about current SCM projects and the metrics are monthly highlights of our work. The Supply Chain Champion will feature a different staff member each month and is a great way to get to know a little bit more about our co-workers and the great work they’re doing.

Our first Supply Chain Champion is Lian Millward. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the bulletin boards, here’s a look at what's on the poster.

Kudos Korner: Great Work By SCM Staff
    • Dianne Holmes is now the Treasurer and Mentorship Chair for the Northern California Institute for Supply Management.
    • Dana Jantz, Manager of the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology at Berkeley sent thanks to Dave Munson and CSS for their work: "Right before curtailment, PMB had a number of very urgent purchasing things to get done before the shutdown. Due to the reduced staffing, I really thought it would be impossible to get everything done.  However, this team really took on the urgency of my requests, and worked very smoothly together and helped me accomplish everything I needed to. I am really grateful to them for that!"
    • Maria Mazzei's work on the UCSF talent acquisition bid earned this from Andrew Clark: "Maria is the BOSS! We will essentially have put together a $100,000 bid for UCSF Talent Acquisition in about three hours. Not a lot of savings, but definitely made us look cool to our Talent Acquisition team at UCSF."
    • Vanessa Wong sends praise to Melissa Gee and Olga Gumankova for the great work they did to get the UCSF Construction Group up and running on BearBuy.
    • New babies, new grandfather: Alex Butler welcomed son, Robert on January 27, Rosabelle Fox delivered a sweet Valentine named Genevieve on February 14 and Paul Mulligan became a grandfather to Logan on March 15.

    SCM Celebrates Holidays
Supply Chain Management (SCM) staff gathered to celebrate the holiday season on Dec. 17 at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. The festivities included some tasty treats from Ann’s Catering, recognition of achievements and milestones and a lively competition to create “ugly sweater” cookies (right). The nice weather also meant that attendees could enjoy a walk through the beautiful gardens. Posters from the event hare on display at Mission Center Building and Fourth Street, but you can see a few here as well.

    Kudos Korner: Praise for Patrick

SCM buyer Patrick Montoya recently received praise for his work with Berkeley's Eel River Critical Zone Observatory and Sensoil, an Israeli company.

"Patrick has been a champion of this project from start to finish. I shudder to think where we might be if he did not work so diligently to keep this process on track," – Project Manager Jennifer Hunter

"I would like to thank you personally for your efforts and willingness to help. You demonstrated loyalty to your employer and organization, while at the same time you highlighted your personal concern and showed genuine sympathy in addition to being effective and prompt. – David Waxman, Sensoils

    SCM in the News
Helium Deal Expands Systemwide: Supply Chain Management’s Alex Butler recently teamed up with Ross Bausone from UC’s Center of Excellence team to get a systemwide deal for helium that will save thousands of dollars.  The article will appear in UCOP's P200 newsletter that is expected to be released this week.
